Black History Celebration through the eyes of Karina

"Nicole explained how slavery first started.  African Americans weren't considered slaves until land owners lost their workers.  So, they captured African Americans and they lost their freedom.  She then talked about the slaves' food rations and the different types of work they did.  We got to feel and look at corn meal.  Later Nicole talked about African American cuisine.  For example, okra, hoping johns, butterbeans,  and sweet potato are a few vegetables that were eaten by African  Americans.     We also tasted grits and they were really good, mostly everyone got seconds.  We ended the day by playing soul food bingo."--Karina
