Elephant & Piggie Visit!!!

Come and join us for a special visit by Elephant & Piggie who will be participate in crafts and stories with us!

Elephant and Piggie is a book series for early readers by Mo Willems. The series, which debuted in 2007 with two books, is done in a comic book style, and features two friends: an elephant, Gerald, and a pig, Piggie.

Happy Juneteenth!!!

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

Today, Juneteenth is enjoying a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities. In recent years, a number of local and national Juneteenth organizations have arisen to take their place alongside older organizations - all with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.

Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing.

On January 1, 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday through the efforts of Al Edwards, an African American state legislator. The successful passage of this bill marked Juneteenth as the first emancipation celebration granted official state recognition. Edwards has since actively sought to spread the observance of Juneteenth all across America.

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

The future of Juneteenth looks bright as the number of cities and states creating Juneteenth committees continues to increase. Respect and appreciation for all of our differences grow out of exposure and working together. Getting involved and supporting Juneteenth celebrations creates new bonds of friendship and understanding among us. This indeed, brightens our future - and that is the Spirit of Juneteenth.

Come join us, during the after hours of the library, for a family game night.

Games include: family trivia, chess, and Minute to Win It!

The game night will be based around you, so whatever you enjoy playing the most, that's what we'll continue to play. Prizes included but not limited to movie passes, candy, books, and so much more!

No registration required and of course, this is a free event for all ages!

End of Winter Wonderland Reading Club Craft Time

For those of y'all who participated in the Winter Wonderland Reading Club by registering online or at a branch location, checked out books, and read at least three books, come and join us on Saturday, 6 January 2018 at 2PM for an End of Winter Wonderland Reading Club Craft Time! If you did complete the reading challenge, you'll also be eligible to win prizes and receive a certificate of completion, so make sure you turn in those reading logs during this craft time.

If you didn't participate, don't worry because there is plenty room for everyone to enjoy this special craft time and refreshments.

Book Talk about Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

EAM is proud to announce that we have collaborated with Mrs. Avalos (Librarian at El Dorado HS) and the other school libraries to facilitate a city wide book talk for our teens.

On Monday, 11 July 2016 @4:30 PM we will convene at the designated library branches to video chat and discuss the book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. During this discussion, we will also be creating our own movie posters. Then on 30 September 2016 we'll all go see the movie at Cinemark East Montana. Directly after the movie we'll host a discussion comparing and contrasting the book and the movie in a reserved party room.

Storytime Fun

Storytime is a time where children have the opportunity to be read to by a Librarian regarding all sorts of fun themes.

Can you guess the theme for the storytime pictured above?!

You guessed it! The ZOO!!!

Ms. Debi sang silly songs, read fun books about the zoo, and ended with a cute mask for everyone to create.

Our library hosts storytime 4x per week all beginning at 11AM, and following storytime, come check out up to 30 books from our wide selection.

Tuesday: Toddler Storytime

Encourage your child to read by reading and having fun along with them. If your child wants to read the same books, allow them to. Children love repetition, and in fact, need it in order to learn.
